It was revealed today that the chinese remake of Meteor Garden, an adaptation of the best-selling manga Boys Over Flowers by Yoko Kamio is most likely a fraud.

Japan publisher Shueisha, Inc. who holds the rights to the popular manga had inked an agreement with Group Eight beforehand stating that no adaptations of any kind can be made after them in the next 2 years. A Group Eight representative said today, "When we signed the contract with Shueisha, Inc., it was stated clearly that after our Korean adaptation, there will be no more drama adaptations of the manga within the next 2 years."

Although Boys Before Flowers originated from Japan, it was first made into a drama by Taiwan in 2001 with the resounding success bringing a sequel 2 years later. The Japanese drama adapation followed in 2005 with a sequel and a live-action movie in 2007 and 2008 respectively. All came away with resounding success. Boys Before Flowers is thus labelled by many to bring success to anyone associated with it.

Two years later in 2009, the word that Korea will also be filming their own adaptation generated much interest within the nation and overseas. To protect the value of the manga and the Korean adaptation, Shueisha, Inc. had decided on withholding the rights to prevent others from filming an adaptation of the drama within the next 2 years.

But lately, there was news that Hunan TV together with Days Entertainment Company will be producing a chinese adaptation of Boys Before Flowers and has generated a lot of interest with all the casting, etc already finalised. Filming is expected to commence soon. Many fans are however very unhappy because of the drastic changes made to the story. But with the latest statement by Group Eight today, they are properly doing the right thing.

Group Eight and Shueisha, Inc. expressed that they will be keeping a close watch on the China remake in case their copyright gets violated.

A First Look at the Chinese Boys Over Flowers

Though there were allegations that the Chinese remake of Boys Over Flowers wasn't going to happen, newly released pictures of the cast (albeit with different actors) seem to confirm the pre-production of the series.

Currently, the pictures are a hot issue on Korean sites because of the similarity of the uniform to the one in the Korean version. Netizens with no lives have stated, "it's a cheap rip-off of the beautiful uniform in our version and they should be ashamed for blatant copying", etc etc. Most remarks seem to point to how tacky the uniforms look.

Though I see the resemblance, I don't get why everyone's making such a big deal. Aside from being damn ugly, I don't think the uniforms will have much impact on the series. What's more important is the cast, and what's most important is how pretty the boys are, right? Well, prepare to be underwhelmed.

Meet the Chinese version of Jun-Pyo. All I could focus on was his hair. Where's the pama (curls)?

This guy is supposed to play Ji-Hoo. Two words: bad hair. Wait, make that three words: REALLY bad hair.

Here's the Chinese Yi-Jeong. His purplish hair looks like the result of cheap black hair dye, and I don't find him that appealing.

Unimportant character Woo-Bin will be portrayed by this guy. He's the only one with normal hair and I think he's the most decent-looking of the group. He should've played Ji-Hoo instead...he seems to have that "quiet" aura going for him.

And last, but not least, is Jan-Di. Hopefully, this chick won't annoy the hell out of me like Goo Hye-Sun. She seems a bit timid and soft-spoken based on her looks, but we'll have to see her acting to be sure.

A First Look at the Chinese Boys Over Flowers

Honestly, we can't really tell based on just pictures, since it's really the acting that determines how well the series will turn out. Hana Yori Dango (i.e. the Japanese version) had a less-attractive F4 (in my opinion) compared to the Korean version, but I enjoyed watching it much more because of the quality of acting. Aside from the fugly uniforms and unappealing different-looking cast, the Chinese version faces a lot of scrutiny because it's like the 100000th remake of the same old storyline and it has lots of predecessors to live up to. Do you think the the Chinese "Boys Over Flowers" will fare well?

Boys Over Flowers hits Taiwan… not hard

Boys Over Flowers hits Taiwan... not hard

The Boys Over Flowers virus has finally hit Taiwan and unfortunately for KBS2, the people of Taiwan are actually smart and realize it sucks the drama premiered to low ratings. So much so, that they had to call in the reinforcements, Goo Hye Sun and Lee Min Ho, to help promote the drama from June 1st - 3rd which is currently airing on GTV station. The mini-tour had lots of fan meetings and show appearances, hoping that the close fan interactions will help bump up the ratings to 2.0 and above.

If they REALLY wanted to get the ratings up, they'd ditch Hye Sun and just have the entire F4 group go and promote it - that would be sure to boost the ratings! I mean, it worked in Korea right?
